French Onion Soup

1/4 cup butter
3 lg. onions, sliced
3 10 oz. cans beef consomme
1/4 cup dry white wine
1/4 tsp. black pepper
4 thick slices french bread
8 oz. Gruyere or mozzarella cheese

In a large saucepan, saute onions in butter until slightly tender. Add consomme, wine, and pepper. Simmer 5 minutes. Divide mixture into 4 individual crocks or oven proof bowls. Top each with a french bread slice and cheese. Bake in at 400 degrees until cheese is bubbly and golden. Serves 4.
