Stove and Oven-
Keep the top of the stove, oven and exhaust fan clean to avoid a grease build up
which could catch fire.
Keep pot and pan handles turned in and away from the burner.
Be careful of hot steam when removing lids from pots and pans.
Check gas stoves to make sure the pilot light is working.
Never leave cooking unattended.
Keep pot holders and dish towels away from the stove area.
Microwave Ovens-
Food can become extremely hot in a microwave oven.
Always use oven mitts or pot holders to remove food.
Remove lids carefully and avoid contact with escaping steam which can cause serious burns.
Appliances-
Keep appliance cords away from hot surfaces.
Do not let cords hang over the edge of countertops.
Keep appliances away from water.
Always dry hands before using an electric
appliance.
Knives-
Always store knives in a holder. Loose knives in a drawer are dangerous.
Keep knives sharp. If a knife is dull, more force needs to be used and can cause accidents.
When cutting with a knife, curl fingers under and point the knife away. Pay attention while cutting.
Clean knives by hand. Placing them in the dishwasher can be dangerous and will dull blades.
Food Safety-
Wash hands often while preparing food, especially after handling raw meats and seafood.
Thaw foods in the refrigerator, not on the countertop. Harmful bacteria can develop at room temperature.
Do not eat any food that has an odor. If not sure, throw it away.
Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly before serving.
Promply refrigerate cooked foods, especially during warm weather.
Never put cooked food on a plate that held raw meat.
Always check food expiration dates.
